Gas logs are one of the best ways to enjoy a warm and comforting fire without the mess and hassle of a wood-burning fireplace. We install gas logs in Newark and the surrounding areas, so we often get a lot of questions about them. Here are a few of the ones we hear the most and our answers to them.
Q: What’s the difference between vented and vent-free gas logs?
A: Vented gas logs are put into a fireplace and the exhaust created will go up and out through the chimney, much like a wood-burning fireplace works. Vent-free gas logs burn cleanly and produce little to no exhaust. The heat that vent-free gas logs produce go directly into your home, which makes vent-free a better bet if you are looking for a way to supplement your home heating system.
Q: Why should I go with gas logs instead of wood?
A: There are plenty of great reasons to go with gas logs. For one thing, you don’t have to worry about buying firewood. For another, creosote and other byproducts of the wood-burning process are not an issue for gas logs since gas logs burn more cleanly than wood.
Gas logs are also more environmentally friendly and, as mentioned, the vent-free gas logs will make your home warmer. Gas logs are also a great thing to have if the power goes out at your home. You can use them as a light and heat source until your power returns.
Q: Can I install gas logs by myself or do I need to hire professionals?
A: No. We do not recommend that you install gas logs on your own. This is a job best left to professionals like us who have the knowledge and experience to do the installation safely and without risk of hurting anyone. We can inspect and clean your chimney first (if we are installed vented gas logs), and we know how to safely and properly install vent-free gas logs as well.
Keep in mind that, as counter-intuitive as it sounds, gas logs cannot be installed in gas fireplaces. If gas logs are put in a gas fireplace, that can cause a lot of problems such as a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
