A regular chimney inspection at your Fort Lee home is an important part of keeping your family safe from the threat of a chimney fire. Through the years, Guardian Chimney has performed thousands of chimney inspections, and we usually find the same problems in just about every chimney we look at. Here are a few examples of the most common issues we find during a chimney inspection.
Unless you never use your fireplace, you have creosote on the inside of your chimney walls. It is unavoidable simply because creosote is a byproduct of the wood burning process. However, a chimney inspection can show us just how much creosote has built up on the walls, and we can clean it off during the cleaning process. You want this done because creosote is highly flammable and could start a fire if it’s not cleaned off of the interior walls of your chimney on a regular basis.
Masonry cracks are as unavoidable as cresote. A chimney is usually encased in bricks or a similar porous material, and over time, water gets into the tiny holes and cracks and continues to freeze and unfreeze, which then causes the brick to develop bigger cracks and start to deteriorate over time. We also offer masonry repair, so if any work needs to be done to this part of your chimney, we can help with that as well.
Because your chimney is on top of your roof, it’s exposed to all of the outdoor elements. Water can cause a lot of damage, so you want to be sure your chimney has the proper waterproofing. If our chimney inspection shows that your chimney needs new waterproofing, this is another common problem we can easily resolve for you.
Damaged or missed chimney cap
A chimney cap is your chimney’s first line of defense between itself and nesting animals. You definitely don’t want any critters making themselves at home in your chimney, so it’s important to have a good chimney cap installed. Not only that, but if your chimney cap is damaged, it could keep smoke and other harmful gasses from properly venting out of your chimney. During the chimney inspection, we will take a close look at your chimney cap to ensure it’s in good shape. If it’s not, we can replace it for you.
